Education

Ryan passed away unexpectedly from Wolff-Parkinson- White Syndrome. WPW is a rare congenital heart defect that is characterized by an irregular heartbeat. The heart has an electrical system that works a certain way. Signals travel in an exact pattern from the upper to the lower chambers of the heart. This system keeps the heart beating regularly.

People with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome have an extra electrical pathway. It causes the abnormal heartbeats. And it could lead to a very serious condition when the heart’s lower chamber’s beat very quickly.

WPW is congenital. Parents can pass it down to their children. But most times it happens randomly and doesn’t run in families. If you have this condition, you also might have other heart problems. Even when you’re born with the syndrome, you may not find out you have it until you’re in your teens or older.

WPW can be easily diagnosed with a simple EKG.

Scholarship

Every year we are awarding two Wethersfield High School Seniors the Ryan Costello Memorial Scholarship. It is given to one baseball and one softball player looking to continue their education. These athletes display the leadership, kindness and dedication on and off the field that Ryan was known for.

“The kid lit up the whole room, no matter where he was.”
